Gerstle Park is a very popular neighborhood in San Rafael known for it’s beautiful pre-World War II homes. It is close to downtown’s shopping and restaurants, and has its own set of community gathering places, including the Panama Hotel, which offers weekly live jazz dinner shows. The neighborhood is also coveted for its proximity to U.S. 101, and in much of the area children attend the highly-regarded Sun Valley Elementary. Due to the smaller average lot size and higher density of homes, this area is quite affordable. At its heart is Gerstle Park, which in the late 1800s was the summer estate of wealthy San Franciscans Lewis and Hannah Gerstle. The park, with a large playground and serene picnic areas, is very popular with local families.
