As September rolls around, many parents have school on the brain! I am constantly asked about the quality of schools in Marin. In particular, the elementary schools. It feels like we have a bit of a baby blooming happening. A slight exodus from San Francisco perhaps. I moved in 2006 from SF to Sausalito and then to the “suburb” of San Rafael and started my own family. I must say that I haven’t looked back – except I do miss the food and occasionally zip over the Golden Gate Bridge for Dim Sum at Tong Kiang at 22nd and Geary…… But let’s get back to my topic of Marin County schools…..
The quality of schools is a major factor for many to consider when looking for and buying a home. Those of you searching for a home should know that public schools in Marin County have a reputation for excellence! In the last six years 17 of the county’s public elementary and middle schools, and 5 of its high schools have been on the list of California Distinguished Schools.
According to the 2012 U. S. Census, Marin County has a population of 256,069. According to the most recent numbers released by the County Office of Education 32,192 of those are students enrolled in a Marin County public school (K-12). This is an increase of 3.2% over last year’s enrollment figures. These figures reflect the increasing demand for homes in areas with good schools.
For those of you with interest in Marin’s public education offerings, the Marin County Office of Education site is www.marinschools.org and it has many great resources. If you are interested in a particular neighborhood, the maps of the 19 Marin County school districts could help you understand to which district that neighborhood corresponds. There is also information about personnel, awards and general statistics.
