Our Beloved Libraries in Marin

Our Beloved Libraries of Marin

In this age of electronics, our e-readers and smart phones and other screens galore, many
of us still find a comfort in wandering through the stacks. It is an outing to take a child, or
three, to pick out book after book to their hearts content, or to sit with them on a knee
while being gently read to by the librarian.  It is a building of knowledge, a refuge in which
to study, and a place of community. Here is a little update about the libraries of Marin.

Central San Rafael Library Expansion       1       2

The vision to create bigger and better library in Central San Rafael is moving ahead in
stages. A consultant is being sought to help determine what shape that vision might take.
A new building or buildings, and extension of the existing space, one location or multiple
locations, these are all possibilities. The one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that
we as a community have out grown the current space. It is too small and too outdated to
meet our needs.
The community has already provided feedback as to what they would like and there is an
active desire to keep people involved in the planning of the project.  The San Rafael Library
Director Sarah Houghton has said she wants to keep the process transparent and inclusive.
We look forward to hearing more about this exciting future for Central San Rafael Library!

3       Civic Center Library

Of course there is more than one library already in San Rafael!
The Marin County Free Library has its home in the Civic Center.  The glorious architecture
by Frank Lloyd Wright houses many county offices, a café, and has even been nominated as
World Heritage Site.
As well as the large collection of books, it is home to the Anne T. Kent California Room, a
collection of local history resources emphasizing the history and culture of Marin County. There are Spanish language materials for children, teens and adults and Russian language
materials for adults. It also has a free 3Dprinter available! San Rafael Civic Center Library
